The Board of Trustees is a crown entity responsible for the governance of schools. A Board is elected every three years by the parents of the school. The principal and an elected staff representative are also members of the Board.

The governance role means the Board is responsible for ensuring that regulations within the Education Act are complied with. However it is the principal who is responsible for the management of the school and who has responsibility for decision-making and the daily running of the school in all its aspects.

A school’s board needs to be able to ensure the government that:

  • The students are receiving a high quality standard of education
  • National priorities for school education are being addressed
  • Resources are being used prudently
  • The school has a clear sense of purpose (strategic goals and charter  are current, objectives are monitored)
  • Priorities and goals are set for improvement of learning and achievement
  • Programme outcomes are evaluated in respect of the goals set
  • School resources are being used in the best way to bring about goals and outcomes
