Background:During 2008-2009 students, teachers, Board of Trustees and the community undertook the development and implementation of the New Zealand Curriculum. This process led to our successfully adapting our learning and teaching practices to reflect the vision, principles and values of that curriculum.
In November of 2009 the Ministry of Education published the National Standards documents for Literacy and Numeracy as a follow on from the New Zealand Curriculum. The National Educational Guidelines were altered to legalise the implementation of the standards. These standards are effective from 2010.
Current Position:Throughout 2010 the staff have undergone professional development aimed at familiarising themselves with structure of the standards and their implications for learning and teaching.
Much of the school’s current good practice in assessment, and its assessment programme, were deemed robust enough to meet Ministry of Education requirements for teachers to make “overall teacher judgements” regarding student achievement compared to a standard in Literacy and Numeracy.
Any modifications to practices to better align to the legislated requirements have been made. (This is a process continually under review).
Reporting:In 2010 the process for mid and end of year reporting to the community was reviewed. As a result of this review new report forms were written and changes made to the way the mid year interview was conducted.
We report twice a year to our parent community on student achievement. Achievement in Literacy and Numeracy is measured against the National Standards. Achievement in other learning areas is reported on in terms of personal growth for the student. The core values and beliefs that are expressed through the key competencies from the New Zealand curriculum are reported on by acknowledging the progress students are making towards developing and practicing these values. Student input is sought in completion of the report.
A Progress report is issued in June to Years 4-6 and to Years 1-3 students who are between anniversaries.
A Progress report is issued in December to Years 1-3 students who are between anniversaries.
An Achievement report is issued in June to Years 1-3 students who have had an anniversary in Terms One or Two.
An Achievement report is issued in December to Years 4-6 and students in Years 1-3 who have had an anniversary in Terms three and Four.
A report (Progress for Years 4-6 and Years 1-3 between anniversaries) is issued in June prior to mid-year interviews. Teachers indicate whether they would like to discuss the report with the student’s family.
There is also provision for the family to arrange an interview if they would like to discuss the report with the teacher.
Open dialogue on student progress and achievement is a priority at Carlton. Parents are always encouraged to discuss their child’s learning with the class teacher, or senior managers, at any time. |
