A Boys’ Only class was established in 2009 (and continues in 2010) with the following aims:
- To maximise student engagement in learning by recognising and accommodating their differences.
- To minimise the amount of teacher time lost in dealing with behavioural issues on a continual basis.
- To implement programmes and actions that will encourage students to reject anti-social behaviour.
- To provide specific programmes for identified students with the intention of changing behaviours into those that are constructive and positive in the learning environment and social context.
Class Structure:
- The class teacher is experienced in relating to students with behavioural issues and meeting their emotional needs.
- The class does not have any ‘special’ identification. i.e. it is known by its room number, to avoid labelling or stigmatising its students.
- There is a full time Teacher Aide assigned to the class to support student t learning and work one-on-one with individuals.
- The class levels span between Years 4 and 6.
- The students are a mix of those with learning/behaviour needs and those students who are ‘average’ as role models.
- Classroom furniture and layout is designed to suit boys’ learning styles and habits.
Class Programme
- The school curriculum is followed and adapted to meet the specific interests of boys.
- Lesson length is kept short to keep students focussed and engaged.
- Physical Activity breaks intersperse the learning. The day begins with a physical game.
- Boys’ competitive nature is utilised as motivation and incentive for learning.
- There is a strong values component around respect, choices and consequences.
- Wherever possible positive male adult role models are sought to open up the boys’ minds to a variety of futures.
