To ensure Carlton School provides a broad-based education for its students, and to utilise all resources and experts available to us, we bring in providers from out side the school. We also take up government initiatives from the Ministry of Education that add value to the social, emotional and educational development of our students.

DARE:

A drug and alcohol education programme for Years 5 and 6 students run by the NZ Police  aimed at educating students on the dangers of these and their effects on physical and mental health. (This programme is run on a 2-yearly cycle).

Life Education:

The Life Education programme is taught in a mobile classroom that visits the school site for the duration of the lessons. All students learn about healthy lifestyle choices, and the importance of diet and exercise,  in a series of lessons over the course of a fortnight  by a teacher that travels with the mobile classroom. (This programme is run on a 2-yearly cycle).

Envirorig:

This is a mobile classroom funded by the Wanganui-Manawatu Regional Council that visits the school site. The aim

is to teach students about the natural environment and how humans impact on it, both positively and negatively. (This programme is run on a 2-yearly cycle).

Duffy Books in Homes:

We are a member of this programme founded by author Alan Duff. His philosophy is that “Kids who can’t read become adults who can’t communicate and that’s a serious disadvantage in a world that operates on the written word”.

Schools enter into a 50-50 sponsorship partnership with a business. Through this sponsorship all children to receiving at least 5 free books a year. Children can earn more books each week through the Caught Being Good Award (an award that reinforces positive behavior and places value on books as a reward). In addition there are Caught Being a Good Dad, Mum, Grandparent awards where books and certificates are awarded to nominated adults.

Twice a year the Duffy Theatre visits the school and the students are treated to a free live performance centred on the world of books.

The final benefit of this programme promoting books and reading  is the Kids At Home component; all pre-schoolers(who have a sibling at school) registered by their families receive a free book on their birthdays.

Fruit in Schools:

This Ministry of Education initiative enables all students to have fresh fruit to eat at school every day. Teachers distribute the fruit twice a day for students to eat in the classrooms.

Safety Programmes:

We regularly teach a range of safety education programmes in conjunction with the Police, the Fire Service, Surf Life saving New Zealand, TranzRail and Swimming New Zealand. The human and educational resources provided by these organisations enable us to give children life skills to keep them safe in their environment beyond the school.

Other:

When required the Public Health Nurse will conduct puberty lessons with Years 5 and 6 girls, and provide support for parents.

The school Dental Nurse supports teachers with oral hygiene education.

People who are experts in their field are visited, or invited into the school to support  inquiry learning programmes.
